Summer Indigo Social - Thursday

Indigo blues are the only stable source of blue in the world of natural dyeing. Although several plants contain indigo, the blue cannot be extracted in water like other natural dyes. Instead, plant matter must be fermented or used fresh to color fabric blue. 

This workshop invites you to dip your toes into the world of natural blue and experience indigo in three ways. Participants are invited to bring a garment to dip in the fermentation vat (giving blue-jean blues). Then we'll apply a fresh process to cotton/silk blend scarves and add printed leaf details. 

What is included:

- A brief introduction to the varieties of indigo growing in the dye garden and the basic principles of working with indigo

- Dyeing your garment in a fermentation indigo vat 

- Dyeing scarf with fresh indigo plants 

- Silk/cotton blend raw-edge 50x50cm scarf

- Persicaria tinctoria and Isatis tinctoria seeds

- Snacks & welcome drink

What you can bring: 

- A garment in natural fiber that you'd like to refresh with blue in the indigo vat (I'll have a few t-shirts available for purchase if you'd prefer) 

- *Optional* A skein of wool yarn or some extra silk fabric (must be wool, no acrylic or polyester!) 

Please note that this is designed to be an experience in working with indigo in various ways, not an in-depth lesson. Participants will leave with the knowledge of how to dye fabric with fresh indigo and create blue leaf prints, but an in-depth workshop on the science and setting up a fermentation vat will likely only come in 2025.

Os azuis índigo são a única fonte estável de azul no mundo do tingimento natural. Embora várias plantas contenham índigo, o azul não pode ser extraído em água como outros corantes naturais. Em vez, a matéria vegetal deve ser fermentada ou usada fresca para colorir o tecido de azul.

Este workshop permite uma primeira abordagem no mundo do azul natural e experimentar o índigo em três maneiras. Os participantes são convidados a trazer uma peça de roupa para tingir na tina de fermentação (dando azul-ganga). Em seguida, aplicaremos um processo com folhas frescas aos lenços com mistura de algodão/seda e adicionaremos detalhes de folhas impressas.

O que está incluído:

- Uma breve introdução às variedades de índigo que crescem no jardim e aos princípios básicos de trabalhar com índigo

- Tingimento numa tina de indigo 

- Tingimento com plantas índigo frescas

- Lenço com mistura de seda/algodão 50x50cm 

- Sementes de Persicaria tinctoria e Isatis tinctoria

- Lanche e bebida de boas-vindas

O que pode trazer:

- Uma peça de roupa em fibra natural que gostaria de refrescar com o azul na tina de índigo (terei algumas tshirts disponíveis se preferirem)

- *Opcional* Um novelo de lã ou algum tecido de seda natural (deve ser lã ou seda mesmo, sem acrílico ou poliéster!) 

Este workshop foi pensado para ser uma experiência inicial ao índigo tocando brevemente em várias tecnicas, não é uma formação aprofundada. Os participantes sairão com o conhecimento de como tingir tecidos com índigo fresco e criar estampas de folhas azuis, mas um workshop aprofundado sobre a montagem de uma tina de indigo ou criação de pigmento provavelmente só acontecerá em 2025.
