Naturally Dyed Pullover

Naturally Dyed Pullover

  • About

Organic cotton pullover sweatshirt ecoprinted with oak and sycamore leaves.

Oak trees are native to Europe and are one of the most well-established varieties of trees in Portugal. The large trees play an important role in natural forestation since they thrive in temperate climates. The whole tree is high in tannins, making it a wonderful source of dye stuff.  Acorns produce a beautiful brown dye and the leaves create reliable prints.

Sycamore is native to Central and Southern Europe. The leaves leave subtle prints in varying shades of light brown. My favorite time to use the leaves is in the fall when they naturally fall and are overwhelmingly abundant on the ground.

  • Care

Care for your naturally dyed clothing by:

    • Washing with pH neutral natural soap in cold water. Please note, the first time you wash the garment some extra dye might come out.

    • Drying out of the sun.

Botanical dyes are often referred to as living colour because of the way the shades mature with time.... depending on the dye used, the pigments will have varying sensitivity to sunlight and washing. Fabrics are treated before dyeing to ensure maximum fatness of the color, but years from now if you'd like to give new life to your garment, I encourage you to experiment with your own techniques.
