About the event
Experience an immersive introduction to the fundamentals of craft dyeing with local plants. In this workshop we'll cover the fundamentals of natural dyeing, using locally abundant plants to create our color palette. Participants will learn to apply vibrant natural colors to fabric that resists wash and wear and will learn to create patterns by playing with different factors.
This workshop is intended for people who like to do things with their hands, want to learn more about the plants growing around them, want to repurpose fabrics and slow down fashion, or are looking for a sustainable craft. Empowered with the information covered, you'll be able to give new life to old clothes, create stunning textiles, explore local plants through a new lens, and connect with your environment.
The workshop structure will be:
- Introductions and best practices
- Fabric choices and preparation
- Mordant options and application (mordanting is the essential pre-treatment that makes your colors bright and permanent)
- Plant collection from the studio's dye garden and neighborhood
- Making a dye bath with locally abundant sources of color, shibori techniques to make patterns, and color modifiers.
- Color modifiers
- Shibori techniques to create patterns
- Final remarks and reflection
Each participant will take home fabric samples from each of the dye baths, a final project of a totebag or t-shirt (you choose in the checkout), a gift of seeds from the dye garden so you can grow your own color, and an in-depth digital booklet to continue your natural dyeing practice from home!
All materials are included - even a light vegetarian lunch (please inform me of any dietary restrictions)!
For each Introduction to... workshop I am offering a scholarship position because I don't believe that wealth should be a barrier to access knowledge (while still needing to make a living). Please submit your interest in this position through the following Google form.
How do I get there?
The workshop will be held at Tinctorium Studio in Abóboda, São Domingos de Rana (close to Carcavelos!). By public transport you can take the train from Lisbon to Carcavelos (line to Cascais from Cais do Sodré), I'll coordinate a pickup from the station to the studio or you can do the last bit by bus or uber.
What language will the workshop be taught in?
The workshop will be primarily taught in English, but anything can be repeated or clarified in Portuguese.
What's for lunch?
Lunch will be vegetarian build-your-own hippie bowls - all the ingredients laid out, you just need to pick what you like! If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, please let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials are included in the enrollment price, but it's recommended to bring a pen and something to write on, appropriate clothing that can get dirty, and a hat or sunscreen since we will be outside.
What if I have to cancel?
Ticket purchases are fully refundable up to a week before the start of the workshop, 50% reimbursement within the week, and no reimbursement within 48 hours.
There is an enormous amount of preparation and planning that goes into each workshop, so unfortunately I'm unable to fulfil refunds in the days leading up. If you can't make it last minute, I recommend finding someone who would love to spend the day creating color from plants to take your place. Thank you for your understanding.
